Jess’s Playlist — My Summer on Route 66

Songs from and inspired by the story • Curated by Brian Keating

Music is a major part of any journey by car. Whether it’s a quick run to the grocery store or a 2,000-mile trek down Route 66, music always rides shotgun. It’s no surprise this iconic road inspired iconic songs—including “(Get Your Kicks on) Route 66,” written by Bobby Troup just after World War II and made famous by Nat King Cole.

Somewhere on Spotify, I have a playlist that leans into the classic Route 66 sound. But for this story’s soundtrack, the vibe is different. Jess is the child of two parents who grew up in the ’90s, and she has a deep love for ’90s—especially alternative—music. For her, those songs are personal: they’re family memories, road-trip snapshots, and a little bit of courage when the highway gets long.

Each chapter borrows its title from a classic alternative track and credits the artist. I’m also using that music thematically as I write—letting songs shape mood, pacing, and scene transitions.

Below is the official Spotify playlist for My Summer on Route 66. Tracks don’t appear in chapter order yet, and some are inspirations rather than chapter titles—but they all live on this road.
